NES emulator is an Android app that plays mirror images of games for the 1980s console, Nintendo Entertainment System, right on your phone.

Emulators on Androids are nothing new. A search in any app store will show that they've been in development for years. However, only a handful of developers can make emulators that truly rival the original experience. Is this app one of those?

Unfortunately, NES Emulator fails to impress even inexperienced gamers. The app comes with 64 NES games, so it's technically illegal to use without authorization from the copyright holders. This shows that the developers may have dubious intentions. Even without considering that factor, it's a badly put together application.

Probably one of the worst parts of this app is the ad placement. Advertisements are intentionally placed extremely close to the controller buttons so that you're almost guaranteed to accidentally open a pop-up ad. It does have some good settings, but the controller is what tips this over the edge into the "skip downloading" pile. The controls are almost unusable. It seems to take many presses to get a button to trigger, and when it does, there's always a delay. Add that to very minimally customizable controller positions, and the game almost gets impossible to play. Between mashing your phone to hit the "A" button and opening a thousand ads by accident, this one is a safe bet to skip out on. There are plenty of other better options on the market right now.

Pros:

  • Comes with 64 free games
  • Generally works and plays NES games

Cons:

  • Intrusive advertising that ruins the experience
  • Controller is very hard to use and impossible to alter to your preferences
